What's an Education Plan?
As a Mesa College student, you and a Counselor will create an education plan that will live in the My Planner section of your mySDCCD portal, which is a personalized list of courses you have chosen based on your academic goals and requirements. Your education plan will provide you with a tentative timeline to completion. You will refer to your education plan as a guide throughout your time at Mesa so you can stay focused and on track toward your goals.
Types of Education Plans
If you are or intend to enroll in a certificate or degree program at Mesa College, we strongly recommend that you meet regularly with a counselor to discuss your long-term plans. We're here for you in more ways than one. Our services are available in person and virtually to meet your needs.
There are two types of education plans:
- Abbreviated Education Plan Abbreviated education plans are designed to meet the immediate needs of students and typically provide planning for one or two semesters. These are typically appropriate for new and continuing students in their first year or who may be undecided in their academic goals.
- Comprehensive Education Plan Comprehensive education plans take into account a student's interests, skills, career and education goals, major, potential transfer institutions, and the steps the student needs to take on their educational path to complete their identified course of study. The comprehensive student education plan is tailored to meet the individual needs and interests of the student. It is typically created once a student has identified their academic goal, after they have completed at least one semester of college-level coursework.
Additionally, students who create a comprehensive education plan with their counselor will be eligible for an earlier registration date.
Value of an Education Plan
Creating an education plan empowers students in navigating their educational journey. When students know how the courses they are taking apply to their degree and can see their progress by using an Education Plan, they're more likely to complete their educational goals.
How do I Create an Education Plan?
Abbreviated education plans can be created with a counselor during same-day drop-in
counseling sessions. To get on the drop-in list, visit General Counseling in-person
on the third floor of the Student Services Building or call 619-388-2672 / email: SdMesaFollowup@gmail.com
Comprehensive education plans can be created with a counselor in an appointment setting
and should be updated regularly. Please schedule your appointment one week in advance
by phone, in person, or online. Check to see if you meet the eligibility requirements and how to schedule your appointment.

How to make the most out of your Education Plan session
Are you ready to create your education plan? Here are some important items to consider and questions to ask your counselor:
- What is my long-term academic goal?
- Am I hoping to transfer? If so, what institutions am I considering transferring to?
- What is my career goal and how will my major tie into this goal?
- Will I be enrolled full time or part time? Am I considering short-term courses or taking classes during intersession or the summer?
- What additional support services are available to help me achieve my goals?
